Earth, Air, Fire, Water: the four elements of design

Strike a balance between Earth, Air, Fire, Water in your home and feel the primal power of the four elements.

The four elements are traditionally associated with ancient Greece philosophy, but in reality, ancient cultures from all over the world have identified these same elements as well: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. Since nobody could ever think of living without these four elements, they have been attributed for thousands of years with great, primal powers that humans can only dream of; ideally, a combination of these four natural forces is a source of harmony. So, are you ready to learn how to balance Earth, Air, Fire and Water in your home? Let’s take a look!

Earth

Earth traditionally symbolizes fertility, prosperity and nourishment. Earth also stands for stability and security, and this is why we think this table below is ideal if you want to enjoy the beneficial vibrations of Earth. Made only from natural wood, this dinner table seems to literally grow from a tangle of roots, and what stands for stability better than ancient roots? We also really loved the connection between the nourishment properties of Earth, and...well, the nourishment properties of a dining table!

However, don’t feel compelled to confine the soothing powers of Earth to the dining room: what about this bizarre and unique sofa? Again, a tangle of roots supports the whole structure: we’re looking forward to crash on this comfy couch with a book and a cup of tea! How handy is it that this sofa is equipped with a warm, golden light and a tiny coffee table?

Air

Air represents lightheartedness and cheerfulness; more importantly, it’s the element that reinforces learning, thinking, imagination, creativity, and travel. So if you feel that your everyday routine needs the breath of life, don’t forget to employ air in your interior design! And what can symbolize air better than bright, impalpable light? You will love this ceiling lamp if you love the night sky and spend hours gazing at far away stars and planets. We also thought of making the most of Air’s creative powers by selecting for you a colorful lamp that would be perfect in your study room...or in your studio, if you’re an artist!

A smart idea would be to coordinate this lively and original lamp with a similarly extravagant piece of furniture. What about this desk? Bright colors are perfect to trigger creativity, and the dynamic shape makes this desk look light as a feather: another great Air-inspired article. Plus, it's equipped with a handy light that will save you from the trouble of having to look for a table lamp!

Fire

Fire was originally considered to be the first element that was born after the Universe was created, and for this reason, it’s associated with the power of giving life, but also of destroying it, in a never ending circle: think about the legend of the Phoenix! However, the fire we style our home with should be more docile and gentle; how about a classic, wood-burning stove? There are two different styles we’d like to suggest you. The first one is a classic look: a stove where the fire is hidden inside a colored and elaborate ceramic structure. It’s been used for centuries and it’s ideal if you’d like to bring a German-Austrian vibe to any room, from the kitchen to a cozy basement room.

The first style we showed you is very traditional and it’s characterized by hidden flames, but we understand that not everyone can be a fan: after all, one of the joys of having a fireplace or a stove is being able to enjoy the glow of the flames. In fact, fire also symbolizes union and affection, so why not make it the centerpiece? Try looking for a fireplace or a stove that will invite people to gather around the warmth of the fire and hang around for a chat and a drink.

Water

What better place to celebrate the cleansing power of water than the bathroom? Remember, what matters here is not really the color or the material, but rather, the shape of the appliances. We’re trying to convey a sense of harmony and fluidity, so try looking for rounded, generous shapes. Mind you, squared shapes are quite in vogue for bathrooms now, but we bet it’s a temporary fashion: oval shapes for bathtubs and basins are never going to be out. As for texture, a sleek, shiny surface will create a feeling of cleanliness and functionality; if you get the idea that your bathroom will look too cold, just try opting for warm, reassuring colors, like brown. Even the right shade of off-white can do the trick!

On the contrary, matte textures will immediately make your bathroom feel super cozy. A suggestion? Try combining different colors! For example, you could play with lighter and darker shades of blue.
