Transparent furniture: decorating with light

Transparencies and translucent object have an undeniable charm: the way they play with light and make us see through them. The magic of those evanescent and weightless designs is created by the best designers in the world. Let us look at some of their work.

Folio is a desk designed by the Yabu Pushelberg duo for the brand Glas Italia. The table is a technical challenge to the limits of glass: it is a desk made from a single 15 mm thick, curved glass sheet. Inspired by a simple sheet of folded paper, it expresses to the highest degree the transparency of the material.

The special welding technique of the flat crystal slabs, which eliminates any opacity between the glued parts, is also the origin of the products by Tonelli Design. This company created an incredible transparent wardrobe, called Shoji, with glass skeleton, mirrored sliding door, walnut bench and drawers. As the name implies, it recalls the tradition of Japanese movable partition panels in paper, which let light and shadows pass.

When it comes to lighting, transparency obviously has a major importance. Among the pieces that best interpret its potential, the Satellight lamp by Foscarini stands out for its uniqueness. A blown glass that envelops a luminous globe like a bell, creating a suspended atmosphere that gives an original touch to every room.

Another fantastic light design belongs to the renowned company Flos: Bon Jour Versailles is a lamp born from the collaboration of Philippe Starck and Baccarat, the most famous producer of crystal in the world. The design is illuminated from the inside thanks to the Led Edge Lighting technology developed by Flos.
