Round and round: give it a spin!

Round and round, all over your house: let's see how a few rounded décor items can make your house cheerful as ever.
Hipster fashion has now gained complete control over square shapes. Take for example those black, thick-framed glasses à-la Woody Allen, by tradition associated with being nerdy: just ten or fifteen years ago, we would have judged them as way too thick, heavy and severe. But ever since smart has become the new sexy, those same glasses have gained new life and become cool and hip. What followed was a re-evaluation of squares, and interior design quickly sharpened up too. But what about round shapes? The truth is, you still need circles, globes, and ellipses to soften up and smooth out excessive sharpness: let’s make sure our homes are not only filled with squares by placing a few fun, round shapes here and there.
Welcome back, world globes!
What’s so great about this last decade is that it’s been ten years of new appreciation for old and almost discarded trends and objects. Possibly spun by the need for making the most of what we had left after the ‘08 financial crisis, fashion designers and interior designers went on a scavenger hunt in search of what they could re-adapt from the past. One of the objects that re-emerged is the traditional world globe. Of course, thanks to Google, we don’t really need to own any actual world map; the result is that the globe has lost its original function and become a decoration piece.
Why is a globe the perfect décor piece to place in our living room? Well, the elaborate reason is that it’s a bridge that stretches from the past and shoots into the future: it reminds us of the time when such an object was actually needed, but at the same time, being so small, it’s also a constant reminder that we’re global. We can jump on a plane and fly to the other side of the world on a day’s notice. That was the intellectual reason; the simple one is that it’s pretty. Choose a contemporary-looking, colored globe, and your living room will tell everyone you’re an insatiable globetrotter with a keen sense of fashion.

These globes can still work as maps, despite being very distant from the traditional sepia-colored ones. As pretty as they are, what if you’re looking for something a bit more refined and essential? In this case, something like this high-end, finely engraved globe might be the perfect solution for you: polished and discreet, it will instantly make your living room more sophisticated.
Globes of light
Still looking for globes? You’ll easily find a more than vast collection among lamps and lights in general. If you’re a Millennial, there’s a high chance you’ll appreciate the sleek nudity of the light bulb. Stripped down of quite literally everything, light bulbs have proven that they can and will be stately décoration pieces all by themselves. We have a couple of tips here for you. First of all, when you choose your lamp(s), make sure the light bulb is never overshadowed by the setting: light bulbs are delicate, glassy objects and a frame that’s too elaborate wouldn’t show them off as they deserve. Finally, light bulbs are being used regardless of their surroundings, but they do go particularly well with an industrial-chic style. True, industrial-chic is fading out, but really: who cares, as long as you like it?
Now, we love the immediacy of light bulbs, but not everyone shares the same taste. Some people love grand, majestic frames around their lights, and who can blame them? They do make an impression! This lamp, for example, is for sure going to get people talking. It’s built on the contrast between copper and wood, as well as the contrast between the geometric skeleton of the upper half and the perfect roundness of the bottom. Doesn’t this astonishing chandelier remind you of a Da Vincian machine?
Mirror, mirror
Of course, how could we forget about mirrors? If you’re looking to introduce some more round shapes inside your home, one easy way to do it is to get a mirror. Now that you’ve chosen your shape, there’s another important decision to make: to frame it or not to frame it? It depends on what role your mirror will play in its designated room. Is it going to be just functional? In this case, you might as well aim for simplicity: a frameless mirror does its job wonderfully and doesn’t distract the eye from the rest of the room. Last but not least, if you’re a bit lazy (don’t worry, we feel you), frameless mirrors are the best possible choice, because you won’t have to worry about how to choose a mirror that chimes with the rest of the furniture: frameless mirrors chime with everything.
Au contraire, if you’re planning for your mirror to play a center-stage role, you need to put thought and attention into the selection of the frame. Since we’re discussing round frames, we would suggest to go for something elaborate, but overall understated. Quality is key here: understatement doesn’t work if the manufacturing quality or the material are shabby.
