Millennial interior design: the homes of the new generation
Millennial interior design is eclectic, dynamic and modern. Let’s find out how the new generation like to decorate their homes.
Millennials are among the most talked-about generations of all time, in a world of delicate equilibrium but offering them the ability to travel anywhere with body and mind; they are known to be creative and think outside the box and when it comes to interior design and home décor they are not far behind. Whether it is an inherited apartment, a renovated space or the result of the first investments of a successful online business, this generation seems to have unique and different needs of life, dictated by the presence of high-tech devices, daring styles and smart and functional furniture that adapts to the personality of the owner. We tried to draw a portrait of the characteristics that these new generations look for in a house; in other words: the typical millennial interior design.
An open, cool and minimal space
Whether it's a small loft or a large apartment, the millennial house must look spacious and match the lifestyle and tastes of the young owner. An open plan set is ideal for sharing spaces and giving that casual and functional atmosphere millennials love, having everything under control at all times. The distinctive characteristic is sobriety: in spite of their sometimes exuberant lifestyle, millennials love simplicity, linearity, avoiding too many bulky furniture that risk suffocating the interior. Their unique sensitivity makes them able to combine creativity with low-cost elements and vintage pieces. In the house of a millennial cannot miss eccentric pieces of design, personal touches of glamour, that can add character to the environment.
What’s wrong with changing your mind?
One thing about millennials is that their taste in style is not static, but it perpetually evolves: it is not only okay to change your mind, it is a good thing, and there is nothing wrong with redecorating along this flow. This young generation loves to experiment and mix, adding color and shapes to the environments: this way immediately acquire a strong personality, that follows their growth and new experiences. Whether they can afford them economically or just save them on their wish list, millennials love luxury finishes: parquet floors, stainless steel appliances, thermal baths with mosaic walls and clear, lacquered surfaces. A way to add a touch of quality in a fast and "short-term" world.
Eco-sustainable solutions
Millennials are not very reach, but they want to spend their money investing in products they believe are environmentally friendly. The millennial generation is very committed to the ecology cause, and knows how to support a cause and make it somehow its own. In terms of house decoration, they know that energy efficiency is fundamental and prefers to contain costs. Conscious and sustainable consumption, recycling, solar panels and waste reduction systems are not only good for the environment, but also for the portfolio in view of the next trip. Items like 100% recycled decorative wall panels are a huge trend, and a great help for the environment.
Home office station
Millennials are different from previous generations also for the way they work. This the era of freelancers, of remote jobs. There are so many professions that do not require physical presence in a specific place, so homes can adapt to become workplaces. But even an office inside a house needs to differentiate itself from the rest of the space: a desk and a laptop are not enough. A millennial office is practical, efficient, but also cozy and stylish, all things supposed to make the job easier while maintaining an aesthetic design in tune with the rest of the apartment.
Multifunctional storage
Millennials love organization, especially considering that their homes are generally smaller than those of previous generations. It is in fact essential for them to exploit the space available as much as possible, using multifunctional storage with hidden compartments to store their belongings. They love beds with built-in drawers, handouts in the kitchen, padded poufs to contain blankets or magazine and, if necessary, become extra seats for friends in the living room.
Artworks
Millennials are a generation that is usually underestimated from a cultural point of view: they recognize the importance and beauty of art, they have high sensitivity for culture, even though it is in their own way. Millennials interior design will include sophisticated artworks hanging on the walls, or even paintings resting on the floor to furnish a certain corner of the room, souvenirs from their travels, and all those objects that offer the opportunity to express their personality leaving a unique mark in their own spaces.
Hygge
Hygge is the Scandinavian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. Over recent years, hygge became a defining characteristic of Danish culture. This lifestyle philosophy believes that it is the small things that count, and millennials are among the most appreciative of the Hygge. At the end of their dynamic days, always on the move, looking for new opportunities, they love relaxing at home, alone with a TV show or organizing a dinner with friends. It is important to create the right intimate atmosphere, through the use of natural fabrics or leather, cushions, candles and essences that make the house the perfect place to spend happy hours with friends or by yourself.
