Crème de la crème: 5 of our favorite Italian design brands

Who’s the crème de la crème in Italy, interior design-wise? There are way too many to keep count, but we racked up five of our favorites, just for you: take a look!
Italy is the land of pizza and fabulous, tasteful style, in this order! It’s not easy, but let’s forget about pizza for now, and let’s focus on style instead. Some of you may have been wondering: what are the best Italian interior design brands? Well, answering this question is virtually impossible! There is no way to identify the absolute best, because first-class quality is the key ingredient of Made-in-Italy furniture and design, so the choice is just too vast! However, what we can do is pointing you in the direction of five of our favorite brands.
Cedes Milano -- Make the most of every day
Cedes is a comparatively new design brand -- founded in 2009. Considering it has not even been around for a decade, Cedes has already started to get a lot of people talking. But what do they design, exactly? Well, this is not a furniture brand; rather, they specialize in taking an everyday object -- say cutlery and tableware, but also toiletry -- and transforming it into a precious and unique design object. They’re known for their craftsman-like use of ethically sourced natural materials, such as horn, bamboo, wood, mother-of-pearl. Their collections are based on the different rooms of the house; so for instance, we’ll have zebu-horn-handled cutlery sets and mother-of-pearl caviar serveware for the kitchen. But, we’ll also have ebony and pearl chess sets for the living room, as well as carbon fibre shaving sets and ox horn manicure sets for the bathroom.
Marioni -- Notorious
Marioni started out as a small pottery shop about five decades ago, but it’s come a long way since then! Marioni is now a well-known furniture brand, both in Italy and overseas. What’s it known for? Basically, for it’s bold, over-the-top (but never excessive) style! A look at the Notorious collection will give you a pretty clear idea of Marioni’s style. Exquisite creations that are becoming so popular you can be sure you’ll spot them pretty much inside every interior design magazine, especially the Ingrid armchair! That golden band has already become an icon.
Smania -- Comfort and quality
Less bold and over-the-top, Smania is a brand that sums up Italians’ passion for comfort, mixed with an understated elegance. Smania is a furniture brand that manufactures luxury upholstery, tables, chairs, and many other home décor pieces, with the living room as its main focus. If asked which rule guides their projects, Smania’s designers would probably answer “Class and good taste”. Take a look at this living room design, for instance: the boldness of the golden upholstery of these classic chairs is perfectly balanced by the neutral but carefully layered gray tones of the sofas and the rug. The final effect is a sense of peace and comfort that makes us wish we had an identical living room.
Cassina - Contemporary furniture
Cassina is another of our favorite Italian furniture brands, and with good reason! The key to its success is seeking collaborations with excellent and brilliant international designers; more often than not, the result is groundbreaking furniture, destined to leave an indelible mark on the onlooker. One of the main feature of a Cassina creation is dynamism, as we can see for example from the Aspen sofa: a horizontal twist gives life to this pure-white creation.
Arcahorn -- Super-lux horn furniture
As the name of the brand suggests, Arcahorn’s most distinctive feature is the use of horn in order to create unique, refined pieces. Far from being rustic or country, every Arcahorn design is a sleek, polished home décor piece assembled by state-of-the-art manufacturers. Horn is combined with leather and exotic wood, and the final result is stunning: take a look at this wooden coffee table with a lacquered glossy black surface and dark horn feet. Place this coffee table in your living room, if you’re aiming to impress your friends with some ultra-lux furniture.
